Importance of Proper Fit and Sizing
A proper fit of shoulder pads is essential to ensure both comfort and protection during any activity requiring their use. For the record the picture above is my youngest who does not play yet!
The correct sizing and fit of shoulder pads ensure that the wearer can perform at their best while maintaining a high level of safety.
Finding the right size for shoulder pads involves measuring the chest circumference and matching it to the manufacturer’s size guidelines. A properly sized shoulder pad should sit comfortably on the shoulders, providing ample coverage without restricting the wearer’s range of motion.
Comfort is a key factor in selecting the right fit for shoulder pads. Ill-fitting shoulder pads can cause discomfort, leading to distractions and potentially affecting the wearer’s performance. Ensuring that the shoulder pads do not dig into the body or slide around during movement will help prevent discomfort and allow for better focus. As seen in the picture below its important to make sure the bottom pad completely covers the shoulder. The top pad is for added protection, however the shoulder needs to be completely covered by the bottom pads.
Protection is the primary purpose of shoulder pads, and an appropriate fit is crucial in achieving optimal safety.
A well-fitting shoulder pad will not only effectively cover the shoulder but will also stay in place during physical activity. This helps distribute impact forces evenly and reduces the likelihood of injuries. Shoulder pads are not only meant to protect the shoulder, but also the upper back and sternum. Making sure the shoulder pads fit to protect your whole upper body is key to helping prevent injury.
Performance is affected by the choice and fit of shoulder pads as well. Wearing shoulder pads that are too large or too small can impede mobility and make it more difficult to execute certain movements.
On the other hand, shoulder pads that are appropriately sized and fitted will allow for a full range of motion, ensuring that the wearer can perform at their best.Shoulder pads can limit mobility, especially in younger athletes.
Finding a shoulder pad that is easy to move in can really improve performance.
In summary, selecting the proper fit and size of shoulder pads is essential to maximizing comfort, protection, and performance. By taking the time to find the right shoulder pads for one’s needs, wearers can enjoy increased safety and improved performance in their chosen activities.
Attaching a back pad to your shoulder pads
There is an option to attach an extra back pad to your shoulder pads. Depending on what position your player plays, you may want to add this. If your kid is getting tackled with the ball, a back pad may add some extra support and protection. The cool part, is most back pads will fit most shoulder pads. They are pretty universally able to attach. Sometimes kids want the extra back pad in order to look cool. There really is no need if you are playing on the line, since you shouldn’t be getting hit in the back too often.
Top 3 Shoulder Pads for Kids
Riddell Pursuit Youth
I really like these shoulder pads. I especially like the extra shoulder pad square in the front. Often times when kids are making tackles, this part of the shoulder can be exposed. This extra pad prevents a helmet from getting in there and causing discomfort.
Xenith Flyte 2SF
These are the shoulder pads I got for my kids. They are super light weight and easy for kids to get on and off themselves.
The front of the shoulder pad easily fits around their heads and tightens securely. I really like the light weight, and the extra back protection, as this shoulder pad fits lower than most in the back and front.
CHAMPRO Youth Scorpion
This is a more cost effective shoulder pad. For the cost I really like the protection it gives. Its going to be a little more bulky and heavy than the above models, but its a very good and safe shoulder pad. You wont regret getting this shoulder pad.
Conclusion
Most leagues will hand out shoulder pads for kids and coaches should help fit these pads and make sure they are safe. Remember shoulder pads will not prevent all injuries. However having a good set of shoulder pads that fit properly will help prevent injury and improve player performance.
