Avid golfers remember Annika Sorenstam and Michelle Wei attempt to compete with the male golfers on the PGA tour. Right now, we are seeing Danica Patrick drive against the likes of Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. What if we saw a female player compete against LeBron James? Probably not fair, in theory. However, that fantasy might become a reality next season. Maverick’s owner, Mark Cuban, is on the record of saying that he’d want to give Baylor star, Brittany Griner, a chance to compete in the NBA.
“If she is the best on the board, I will take her,” Cuban said, via ESPN Dallas’ Tim McMahon. “I’ve thought about it. I’ve thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I’d lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it’s not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it.”
Griner is all for it. Within hours, she tweeted, “I would hold my own! Lets do it.”
The WNBA draft is in April and the season begins in May. The NBA summer league is in June so there would be some conflict as to which league she’d want to play. Cuban would thrive from a ticket sales stand point, however, I don’t see her being able to cover NBA players. Atleast, I don’t want to see it, I hope I don’t see it, and I don’t think I will see it.
