Derek Jeter was drafted 6th overall in the 1992 MLB Draft. The picture below is a scout sheet from the Colorado Rockies who were drafting at 27th overall. On a side note – The Cleveland Indians drafted 2nd overall this season and took Paul Shuey over Jeter. Indians fans will be in quick defense that they had Omar Vizquel, but in reality … they didn’t yet. The Indians acquired SS – Omar Vizquel in 1994. Other teams who passed on Jeter were: Houston Astros, Montreal Expos, Baltimore Orioles and Cincinnati Reds. Jeter posted high batting averages for his high school baseball team, batting .557 in his sophomore year, .508 average as a junior, and his senior year, he batted .508 and compiled 23 RBIs, 21 walks, 4 HRs, a .637 on-base percentage (OBP), a .831 slugging percentage (SLG), 12 stolen bases (in 12 attempts), and only one strikeout.
