Shaka Smart has agreed to become the next University of Texas head basketball coach a source told Legion Report. Smart compiled a 163-56 record while at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has led VCU to the NCAA Tournament five times compiling a 7-5 record along with a Final Four berth in 2011. According to media reports, he scheduled a team meeting tonight at 8 pm.
The Texas program has struggled the past few seasons including going 20-14 this past season and an early NCAA Tournament exit from Butler. Rick Barnes was let go this past season despite leading the Longhorns to the “Big Dance” 16 of the past 17 seasons.
The University of Texas has not reached the Final Four since 2003.
