NFL rule changes 2023 – What changed along with player reactions

There have been some changes to the rules in 2023. Most of them make little or no impact to what you will see on Sunday mornings. However there are a few rules that may make the game look different. There has also been some backlash from coaches and players on the rule changes for the upcoming season.

Here is an in depth break down of these rules and everything you need to know.

Rule 1 – Players can now wear the number ‘0’

Historically ZERO was on the ‘do not wear list’. This rule was proposed by the Eagles. Lets get those #0 jerseys out!

Rule 2 – Play clock adjustment

This rule was proposed by the LA Chargers and the play clock will now be adjusted after a review

Rule 3 – 4th down challenges

This rule was proposed by the Texans, and it allows the referee to review a play on his own when its 4th down.

Rule 4 – Launch rule

The definition of launch is now one or both feet. Before I believe the defender only ‘launched’ at a player when he left both feet.

Rule 5 – Tripping penalty

Tripping will now be a 15 yard personal foul.

Rule 6 – Fair catch on a kick off

Kick offs are one of the most dangerous plays in a football game. This rule allows the kick returner to call a fair catch putting the offense at the 25 yard line. This rule got the most response from payers and coaches.

Rule 7 – Forward hand offs

In 2023 you cannot hand the ball off forward, much like an illegal pass.

Rule 8 – Helmet to helmet rule clarification

Instead of words like Butt, Ram and Spear the helmet to helmet definition was changed to impermissible use of the helmet.

Rule 9 – Claiming rule

Teams can claim a waived player on Monday for players who were waived by Saturday the week prior.

Rule 10 – Tie breaker change

Strength of victory will now be the tie breaker for regular season standings.

Rule 11 – Post season signings

Rosters will now be frozen at 4pm ET on Wednesday following the last week of the season.

Rule 12 – Illegal kick alignment

Illegal punts, and kicks will be aligned, and have the same enforcement as an illegal pass.

Rule 13 – Half time extension

This rule will prevent the offensive team from benefiting off a foul. If the offense commits a penalty the at the end of the half, they will not get another play.

Rule 14 – Brock Purdy rule

Teams can now carry an extra QB as an extra emergency spot. We all know the Niners win the Superbowl last year if they had a QB in that game vs the Eagles.
