Winning the World Series is the goal, but just getting there is an achievement that many franchises have never managed. Reaching the Fall Classic means surviving a long season and a gauntlet of playoff rounds to claim a pennant, and some teams have done it dozens of times while others are still waiting for their first trip. So which franchise has appeared in the most World Series, and how does every team compare?
The all-time leader has been to the World Series more than 40 times, nearly double the next-closest club, while a handful of franchises have never made it at all. The gap between the perennial contenders and everyone else is one of the widest in sports.
The chart below ranks every franchise by total World Series appearances, with their record in those series and most recent trip. Take a look, then we’ll break down what the numbers show.

The Team With the Most World Series Appearances
The New York Yankees have appeared in the World Series 41 times, by far the most of any franchise. They have won 27 of those for a record that no other team approaches, but even their 14 losses alone would rank among the most appearances in baseball. The Yankees also hold nearly every related record, including most World Series games played and most games won, a reflection of a century of sustained dominance built on dynasties from the Babe Ruth era through the late 1990s.
The National League’s Heavyweights
Behind the Yankees, the next group is led by three storied National League franchises. The Los Angeles Dodgers sit second with 23 appearances, a total boosted by their recent back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025, though their 9-14 record in the Fall Classic reflects a long history of hard-luck finishes, many during their Brooklyn years. The San Francisco Giants follow with 20 appearances, and the St. Louis Cardinals with 19. The Cardinals have the best title efficiency of the group, converting 11 of those trips into championships, the most in the National League.
The Middle of the Pack
After the top four, the appearance counts drop into the low teens and single digits. The Athletics franchise has made 14 trips, most of them during its early dynasty years in Philadelphia. The Boston Red Sox have 13 appearances, the Chicago Cubs and Detroit Tigers are in the double digits, and clubs like the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves round out the group of regular October visitors. These are the franchises that have been good often, even if they have not always finished the job.
Teams Still Waiting
At the other extreme, several franchises have never reached the World Series at all. The Seattle Mariners are the most notable, the only original member of their era yet to make it, despite some strong teams over the decades. A few other newer expansion clubs are also still chasing their first pennant. In a sport that has been played for more than 120 years, never making the World Series is its own kind of difficult distinction.
Appearances Versus Titles
Appearances tell a different story than championships. A team can rack up trips to the World Series without winning many, as the Dodgers and Giants both show with losing records in the Fall Classic despite ranking near the top in appearances. Getting there is one accomplishment, finishing the job is another. If you want to see where all of these teams play, our guide to the oldest MLB stadiums ranks every ballpark by age, including the historic homes of several of these franchises.
The Bottom Line
The New York Yankees lead all franchises with 41 World Series appearances, almost double the second-place Dodgers at 23, followed by the Giants (20) and Cardinals (19). The appearance list rewards sustained excellence across decades, separating the perennial contenders from the teams still chasing a first trip. Banners come from winning, but simply showing up in October, again and again, is a measure of greatness all its own.
