Why Leave a Kingdom?
NDSU had nothing left to win at the FCS level and increasingly little to gain financially from winning it. FBS membership brings conference media-rights money, better scheduling inventory, and access – eventually – to the CFP’s Group of Six automatic bid. The calculus that kept Fargo in FCS for a decade flipped once the Mountain West, desperate after losing Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State to the rebuilt Pac-12, came calling with flagship status.
The Transition Tax
FCS-to-FBS programs don’t get instant citizenship. NDSU is postseason-ineligible until 2028 – no bowls, no Mountain West championship game, no playoff – while its scholarship counts and structures phase up to FBS levels.
