The Tour Championship pays out more than any other event on the PGA Tour, but the headline number is easy to get wrong. There are two separate pots of money at East Lake in 2026, and they no longer work the way they did a year ago.
The tournament purse is $40 million, with $10 million to the winner. Separately, the FedEx Cup champion collects a $10 million bonus. Win at East Lake and you take both, plus a five-year PGA Tour exemption.
The Big Change for 2026
Two things moved this year. First, the $40 million purse is now classified as Official Money and is fully separate from the FedEx Cup bonus pool — previously the two were entangled, and the finale’s payout was tied directly to the three playoff events preceding it.
Second, and more consequentially, the roughly $100 million in FedEx Cup Bonus Money is now settled at the end of the BMW Championship rather than after East Lake. The player leading the standings when the BMW ends banks $23 million regardless of what happens in Atlanta. That pool now pays the top 125 in the standings rather than the top 150; the money that previously went to Nos. 126-150 was reallocated to players in the Pathways system through the Member Support Program.
Why a Player Can Win $33 Million
The maximum haul comes from stacking the pots. A player who is No. 1 in the standings when the BMW Championship ends collects the $23 million top bonus. If that same player then wins at East Lake, the $10 million FedEx Cup champion bonus is added on top — $33 million in bonus money, before counting the $10 million winner’s share from the tournament purse itself.
Below that, players finishing 51st through 125th in the final standings share $10,450,000 paid as deferred compensation into their retirement accounts rather than as cash. For the events that feed into all of this, see our breakdowns of the BMW Championship purse and how many golfers advance to the Tour Championship. Full distributions are published by the PGA Tour.
The Bottom Line
A $40 million purse, a $10 million winner’s share, a separate $10 million FedEx Cup bonus, and up to $33 million in total bonus money for a player who leads wire-to-wire through the playoffs. Even 30th place at East Lake is worth $355,000. It is the richest week in golf, and in 2026 the money is split across two clearly separated pots for the first time.
