Alabama leads the Iron Bowl 52 to 37 with a single tie, and has won the last six. The rivalry has been played 90 times since 1893, which is fewer than you would expect for two schools 160 miles apart, because they refused to play each other for 40 years.

The 40 Year Gap
Alabama and Auburn did not play each other between 1908 and 1947. The stated reasons were disputes over expenses and officiating after the 1907 tie, but the real one was that neither school wanted to give the other the satisfaction of resuming. It took a resolution from the Alabama state legislature to force the game back onto the calendar.
The 1948 resumption ended 55 to 0 to Alabama, still the largest margin in the series. The game has been played every year since.
Where It Was Played
For most of the 20th century the Iron Bowl was played at Legion Field in Birmingham, with tickets split evenly. Alabama went 34 and 18 there, and Auburn argued for decades that Birmingham was not neutral at all.
The game moved to campus in 1989, when Auburn hosted for the first time and won. It has alternated between Jordan-Hare and Bryant-Denny since 2000. Auburn, notably, has a winning record in Iron Bowls played on campus at both venues, a statistic that survived even the Saban years.
The Two Games Everyone Remembers
2010. Alabama led 24 to 0 at home. Cam Newton, on his way to the Heisman and a national title, brought Auburn back to win 28 to 27. It remains the only time Nick Saban lost an Iron Bowl at Bryant-Denny.
2013. The Kick Six. With the score tied and one second left, Alabama attempted a 57 yard field goal. It fell short, Chris Davis caught it at the back of the end zone, and returned it 109 yards for the winning touchdown. Alabama was ranked first and went from a national title path to a Sugar Bowl loss in a single play. It is the most replayed moment in the history of the rivalry.
The Saban Era
Nick Saban went 9 and 5 against Auburn at Alabama, a record that is good but not the dominance he achieved against everyone else. Four of the five losses came in Auburn, and three of them, in 2010, 2013 and 2017, cost Alabama a realistic shot at the national championship.
The Current Streak
Alabama has won six straight since 2020, including the last two under Kalen DeBoer. The 2025 game at Jordan-Hare was decided on fourth and two with under four minutes left, when Ty Simpson found Isaiah Horton for his third touchdown of the day after Auburn had tied it.
What the Series Means in the SEC
Between them the two schools hold 38 SEC championships, 30 for Alabama and eight for Auburn. Alabama has 18 claimed national titles to Auburn’s two. The gap in trophies has never mattered much to the game itself, which has been decided by a touchdown or less more often than the records would suggest.
