The walk on. Swinney paid his own way at Alabama, made the team as a receiver, earned a scholarship and won a national title in 1992 under Gene Stallings. He coached receivers and tight ends at Alabama through 2000, was let go in the Mike DuBose purge, and spent two years selling commercial real estate in Birmingham before Tommy Bowden hired him to coach Clemson’s receivers in 2003.

Is He Actually on the Hot Seat?
The honest answer is that the talk is real and the math is not. Clemson would owe $57 million to fire a coach who has won two national titles and eight conference championships, and Stewart Mandel of The Athletic put it plainly this summer: the school does not have the capital to set that kind of money on fire. Pete Thamel of ESPN went further and said Swinney is simply not on the hot seat. What is true is that the patience has narrowed.
