The Freshman Season That Made Him a Target
Heintschel took over on October 4, 2025 as an 18 year old and immediately won five in a row. He became the first true freshman since Jameis Winston in 2013 to record at least three touchdown passes and 300 yards in three of his first six career games, and the first Pitt quarterback to throw for 400 yards in a game.
That production made him a portal target. Miami, fresh off reaching the national championship game in January, reportedly tried to lure him away. He stayed, and the start to 2026 suggests why Pitt wanted him to: he is the second Pitt quarterback this century to attempt at least 70 passes without an interception through two games, joining Kenny Pickett in 2021.
The one blemish on his record is the opponent he faces tonight. Syracuse held him to 140 yards with no touchdowns and an interception last October while sacking him seven times, which is the single worst game of his career and the reason the Orange defense is worth watching in the rematch.
