What Separation Tells You

Separation is the average distance between a receiver and the closest defender at the moment the ball arrives, or when an incomplete pass is thrown. More separation usually means easier catches, but context matters: slot receivers and tight ends running short routes often post high numbers, while deep threats who are targeted far downfield tend to have less space. Compare separation with air yards per target to see which receivers get open on difficult routes. Players need 10 targets to appear.
