The Houston Astros won the 2026 AL West with an 81 and 81 record, the first time in the divisional era, which began in 1969, that a team has won a division without a winning record. Houston was 11 games under .500 at its low point, fired its general manager in August and clinched only by beating the Athletics in West Sacramento on the final Saturday and Sunday of the season. The reward is the No. 3 seed and home field for the Wild Card Series against the White Sox, which opens Tuesday, September 29, at 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN and Peacock.

Sub .500 teams have reached the playoffs only in the strike shortened 1981 split season format. In 1994 the Rangers led the AL West at 52 and 62 when the strike ended the season.

How It Happened

The AL West had no team play consistently well. The Mariners fired manager Dan Wilson on September 27 after finishing 76 and 86, the Angels lost 100 games for the first time in franchise history, and the Rangers and Athletics never separated from the pack, which left the division to whoever held on in the final week. Houston used its top starters to clinch on the last weekend, so it opens the postseason with a bullpen game: AJ Blubaugh opens Game 1, with the rotation thinned further by Cristian Javier’s injury.

Why a .500 Team Can Host

MLB’s 12 team format guarantees each division winner a playoff spot and seeds the three division champions ahead of the wild cards regardless of record. The Astros, at 81 and 81, are seeded above the 4 seed Yankees and 5 seed Red Sox, both of whom won more games, and host all three games of their series. Only the two best division winners get byes, so Houston still has to survive a best of three to reach the Division Series against the Guardians.
