Why the Buyout Was the Point
Athletic director Troy Dannen said he started talks around Week 3 of the 2025 season because Nebraska was exposed with a $5 million buyout as jobs like Penn State opened. Rather than raise Rhule’s pay, Nebraska tripled what it would cost another school to hire him and added playoff based raises, a structure Dannen called mutually beneficial. Penn State hired Matt Campbell instead.
