Arch Manning is the third generation of the most famous quarterback family in American football, and the one detail people get wrong most often is which Manning is his father. It is not Peyton and it is not Eli. It is Cooper, the oldest brother, the one who never got to play.

The Name
Arch is named for his grandfather: Archibald Charles Manning, the same as Archie. He is the first Manning of his generation to play quarterback at a major program and the first to go somewhere other than Ole Miss or Tennessee; Texas won a recruitment that included Alabama, Georgia and the family school in Oxford.
The Isidore Newman Thread
All of it runs through one small school in New Orleans. Archie moved the family there when he played for the Saints; Cooper, Peyton and Eli all played at Isidore Newman; Arch started at Newman as a freshman and left as the No. 1 recruit in the country. The school has produced three Manning quarterbacks and one Manning receiver who never got his career.
Cooper’s Story, and Why It Matters for Arch
Cooper was the first of the brothers to be a star, a receiver good enough to sign with Ole Miss, where his younger brother Peyton was going to throw to him. Numbness in his hands led to a diagnosis of spinal stenosis and he never played a college game. Archie has said it was the hardest thing the family went through; Peyton wore Cooper’s number 18 for the rest of his career because of it.
