Arizona racing runs backwards from most of the country. Summer is brutal, so the calendar is thin from June through August and then explodes in late September and stays packed through April. If you are looking for a first 5K or trying to string together a fall race schedule, the table below covers what is on the calendar across the state.

Free 5Ks Every Saturday: Arizona parkruns

If you do not want to pay an entry fee or wait for a race weekend, Arizona has free, timed, weekly 5Ks through parkrun. They run every Saturday morning, year-round, at permanent locations. You register once online, print a barcode, and it works at any parkrun in the world.

When to Race in Arizona

The season is the opposite of most states. From late May through early September, daytime highs in the Valley make road racing genuinely unsafe, so what survives the summer is either at elevation — Flagstaff, Prescott, Williams — or run at night. Phoenix has a real night-race culture for exactly this reason, and several of the September and October events above start after dark.

From mid-October through April, Phoenix and Tucson are close to ideal: cool mornings, dry air, flat courses. That is why the Valley draws so many winter half marathons and why a first-time 5K is easiest to train for in the fall.
