The Hail Mary
Michigan was a 27.5 point favorite over Western Michigan and trailed 12 to 7 in the final minute. Underwood threw a Hail Mary that fell incomplete with the clock reading zero, officials reviewed it and put one second back, and on the next snap he found JJ Buchanan for a 47 yard touchdown to win it 13 to 12. Both the Big Ten and the Mid American Conference issued statements about the sequence, and NBC’s rules analyst questioned how the officials arrived at one second. The Short Version
Underwood became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Michigan since Tate Forcier in 2009 and set a program record for a freshman debut with 251 yards against New Mexico. The season was uneven from there: 9 of 24 in a loss at Oklahoma, a 114 yard rushing game against Central Michigan, a career high 270 passing against Wisconsin, and 11 touchdowns against nine interceptions on 60.3 percent passing. Michigan finished 9 and 4. Sherrone Moore is gone and Kyle Whittingham arrived from Utah as the 22nd head coach in program history, with Jason Beck calling the offense. Michigan opened 2026 ranked 16th in both polls.
The Bottom Line
Bryce Underwood is a 19 year old sophomore from Detroit who was the No. 1 recruit in the 2025 class and threw for 2,428 yards with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions as a true freshman starter. He is the youngest of the marquee quarterbacks in the sport and the one with the most room to move, and he opened his second season by winning a game Michigan had nearly lost.
