What Actually Happens When a Player Leaves Mid-Season
Players do quit teams in October, and the mechanics are less dramatic than the headlines suggest. He stops practicing and playing, keeps or loses his scholarship depending on the school and the timing, stays enrolled if he wants to preserve the academic side, and waits for January to enter the portal. Nothing about leaving in-season speeds up the move, and in most cases it costs him the rest of the season for nothing. A redshirt is the one thing that can be salvaged: a player who has appeared in four games or fewer can stop there, preserve the season under the four-game rule, and still enter the portal in January with the year intact. The compressed calendar is deliberate. Coaches pushed for a single window so they could evaluate rosters before the portal opened rather than re-recruiting their own players every April, and the tradeoff is that a player who has a bad September has to live with it until January.
