What Is the Labour Day Classic?
It is the CFL’s oldest and best attended tradition: a set of rivalry games played on the Labour Day weekend, each one followed by a rematch the next week with the venues flipped. Three pairings carry the name. Hamilton hosts Toronto, Calgary hosts Edmonton in the Battle of Alberta, and Saskatchewan hosts Winnipeg, with that rematch known as the Banjo Bowl.
The rematches this year are on Saturday, September 12: Saskatchewan at Winnipeg for the Banjo Bowl at 4:00 p.m. ET, and Calgary at Edmonton at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Argonauts at Tiger-Cats
Hamilton has dominated the history and is losing the present. The Tiger-Cats lead the all-time Labour Day series against Toronto 37-16-1, a margin built over decades, but the Argonauts have won the last two meetings including a 39-20 result in Week 12. Hamilton has lost four of its last five and a home loss here would leave the Ticats in real trouble.
The market has Toronto favored by about four with a total around 58, which is a high number even by CFL standards and reflects how little either defense has slowed anyone down lately.
Elks at Stampeders
The better game, and the closer line. Calgary has owned this fixture, winning 11 of the last 13 Labour Day meetings with Edmonton, and comes in off a 28-23 win over Hamilton. Head coach Dave Dickenson is two wins from tying Bud Grant and John Hufnagel for tenth on the all-time CFL coaching wins list, and a Labour Day win would put him there.
Edmonton is the reason this one is close to a pick. The Elks own the league’s best turnover ratio at plus 14 and its stingiest scoring defense at 25.4 points allowed per game. Quarterback Cody Fajardo needs roughly 226 passing yards to become the 23rd quarterback in league history to reach 25,000 for a career, though he is 1-3 lifetime in Labour Day Classics.
How to Watch in the United States
CBS Sports Network carries both games, and this is the last year it will. 2026 is the final season of the CFL’s American television agreement with CBSSN, so a US broadcast home for 2027 and beyond is still an open question. Games not on CBSSN stream in the United States on CFL+.
In Canada everything is on TSN, with TSN+ streaming and RDS2 carrying the French language broadcast of the Toronto and Hamilton game.
Where the Season Stands
The CFL plays a 21 week regular season that ends Saturday, October 24. The playoffs follow, and the 113th Grey Cup is Sunday, November 15 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, which means the Stampeders are hosting the championship game in the same building where they play on Monday afternoon.
