The word dinger is commonly used to describe a home run by TV, announcers or fans. I can remember as a player hearing this word frequently throughout the dugout when a home run with it it’s hard to track down where the use of this phrase came from but it has been around for quite a while.
Listen closely during your next baseball game that you watch and you will likely hear it a few times throughout the baseball game
2. Long Ball
Long ball is another common slang term used for home runs from time to time. Because the balls have to clear the fence, the term “Long Ball” rolls off the tongue easily to describe a dinger!
3. Bomb
Bomb was a nickname that was most commonly used for home runs when I played baseball. In college and high school, when a ball was smashed my teammates and I would say “dude that’s a bomb!” and stop what we were doing and watch it sour beyond the fence.
4.Big Fly
Big Fly was a term I remember being used commonly by SportsCenter anchors in the late 90s. Sports reporters during that era came up with unique ways to make highlights entertaining and “Big Fly” was thrown around a ton. I haven’t heard it used much recently.
5. Moon Shot
That was a towering “Moon Shot” in the 5th inning by Barry Bonds.
6. Went Yard
Did you see Mike Trout went yard twice in yesterday’s game?
7. Blast
“Kenny Griffery Jr. had a two-run blast in the bottom of the 9th to win the game.”
