The Record Crowd
The largest crowd in stadium history was 105,215 for Georgia in October 2024, the first meeting between the two as SEC members and a game between the top five teams in the country. It broke the previous record by two. That mark, 105,213, had been set in September 2022 when Alabama came to Austin and won 20 to 19 on a field goal with ten seconds left after Texas had taken the lead with 89 seconds remaining.
Both crowds exceeded the official capacity by roughly 5,000, which the stadium achieves with overflow standing sections for the largest games.

The South End Zone
For most of its history the stadium was open at the south end, which is unusual for a venue this size. The 2019 to 2021 project spent about $200 million enclosing it with permanent seating, suites and a new player entrance, without raising the official capacity. The field was renamed Campbell-Williams Field for the programme’s two Heisman winners at the same time, and a statue of Julius Whittier, the first Black letterman in Texas football history, was placed outside.
The Name
The stadium was dedicated in 1924 as War Memorial Stadium in honour of the 198,520 Texans who served in the First World War and the 5,280 who died. It became Memorial Stadium in 1948, Texas Memorial Stadium in 1977, and took Darrell Royal’s name in 1996, twenty years after he retired with three national championships. He is one of a small number of coaches to have a stadium named for him while still alive.
Home Field
Texas has won more than three quarters of its games in the stadium across 101 seasons.
