How They Got Here

The United States needed a fourth quarter to put away Spain, winning 76-66 after trailing early and being tied at 58 heading into the final period. Breanna Stewart led the Americans with 16 points and Kahleah Copper added 13, with Jackie Young taking over down the stretch. Spain’s Iyana Martin and Maria Conde scored 17 apiece.

France had the easier night, beating host Germany 86-64. The French scored nine unanswered to open the second half, pushed the lead to 16, and closed the game on a 12-0 run after Germany had cut it to nine.

What Is at Stake

A fifth consecutive World Cup gold for the United States would tie the Soviet Union’s record of five straight, set between 1959 and 1975. The Americans have won four in a row and six of the last seven tournaments going back to 1998. Their winning streak at the World Cup now stands at 35 games, dating to a semifinal loss to Russia in 2006.

For France, this is the chance to settle 2024. The Americans beat them by a single point in the Olympic gold medal game in Paris.

The Result
