What to Watch For
Inter opened its title defense with a 4 to 1 win over promoted Monza and followed it with a 1 to 0 win at Cagliari, and it carries a 14 match unbeaten run in all competitions into Saturday. Cristian Chivu won the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia in his first full season and has kept his lineup under wraps with several players still building fitness after the summer World Cup. Djed Spence is a doubt and Marcus Thuram is reportedly short of full fitness, which points to Francesco Pio Esposito starting alongside captain Lautaro Martinez.
Napoli is in transition. Antonio Conte is gone, Massimiliano Allegri is in, and the results so far are one of each: a 2 to 0 win at Genoa in the opener, then a 2 to 1 home loss to Como last weekend. Kevin De Bruyne runs the midfield with Stanislav Lobotka and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa, and Rasmus Hojlund leads the line. Allegri’s teams beat Inter twice last season when he was at Milan, so Chivu knows exactly what a pragmatic Allegri side looks like.
The recent series is tight: the last three meetings produced two draws and a Napoli win, and both teams have scored in each of the last five. But Napoli has not won at San Siro in Serie A since 2017, and Inter has not lost at home in the league since last November.
The Bottom Line
Inter vs. Napoli kicks off at noon ET Saturday from San Siro on CBS, streaming on Paramount+. Inter is the champion, unbeaten in 14, and at home. Napoli is the more unsettled side under a new manager but has De Bruyne and a defense that has kept three straight clean sheets on the road. The historical edge and the form both say Inter, and the recent head to head says it will be close.
