Why He Went on the List
Ohtani had missed six of seven games in early September as the Dodgers tried to manage the knee and biceps day to day. He returned September 7 against Cincinnati, went 0 for 3, and felt something in his right arm on a swing. Roberts said the team had tried to kick the can as long as it could and that putting him on the list, with a clear stretch of rest, was the right call. He did not travel on the East Coast trip that followed. Before the list stint he was 2 for 26 over his last seven games.
Why He Will Not Pitch
Ohtani was shut down from throwing when the arm flared, and there is not enough season left to build up to starts, or even to work as an opener, before October. The Dodgers have said all year that his bat matters more than his arm to a third straight title, and that is the version of Ohtani the postseason will get.
What Comes Next
Los Angeles has clinched the NL West and needs one more win, or one Atlanta loss, to lock up the No. 2 seed and a bye through the Wild Card Series, which would give Ohtani until October 3 before his first postseason game.
