LSU Football All-Americans: Complete List and History

LSU has produced 41 consensus All-Americans, and Billy Cannon is the only one named unanimously in two seasons, 1958 and 1959. The most recent unanimous selection was cornerback Mansoor Delane in 2025, which continued the program’s longest running claim: more of its consensus honours have come in the secondary than at any other position, which is where DBU comes from.

Billy Cannon, Twice

Cannon was named first team by every selector in 1958, the national championship season, and again in 1959, the Heisman season. No other LSU player has been unanimous twice. He is one of five Tigers to be consensus All-American in two seasons, with Gaynell Tinsley, Tommy Casanova, Charles Alexander and Grant Delpit. Our Heisman winners page covers his 1959 punt return.

Tommy Casanova, Three Times

Casanova is the only three time All-American in program history, named first team by at least one selector in 1969, 1970 and 1971, and was unanimous in his final year. He played defensive back, returned punts and ran the ball, and Sports Illustrated put him on its cover before the 1971 season as the best player in the country. He later served in the Louisiana state senate.

DBU

LSU’s claim to the name is built on Casanova, then on Patrick Peterson and Tyrann Mathieu in consecutive seasons in 2010 and 2011, both unanimous, both Thorpe Award winners. Peterson also won the Bednarik. Grant Delpit followed with the Thorpe in 2019, Derek Stingley was a consensus selection as a freshman that same year, and Mansoor Delane in 2025 was the most recent unanimous pick. Five unanimous All-Americans in the secondary is more than any other program can show. Our NFL draft page covers where they went.

The 2019 Team

The national championship team produced four consensus All-Americans: Joe Burrow at quarterback, Ja’Marr Chase at receiver, Grant Delpit at safety and Derek Stingley at cornerback. Chase and Delpit were unanimous. Chase won the Biletnikoff, Delpit the Thorpe, Burrow the Heisman and every quarterback award, and Lloyd Cushenberry the Jacobs Trophy as the SEC’s best blocker. Fourteen players from the roster were drafted the following spring.

The Award Winners

Glenn Dorsey in 2007 won the Outland, Lombardi, Nagurski and Lott in a single season, a sweep no defensive lineman had managed. Devin White won the Butkus in 2018 and Josh Williams the Rimington in 2003. Will Campbell won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy in 2024 and was a consensus All-American before going fourth overall.

The Bottom Line

LSU has 41 consensus All-Americans, and Billy Cannon is the only one unanimous in two seasons. Tommy Casanova is the only three time All-American, the 2019 champions produced four consensus selections, and the secondary has produced five unanimous picks from Casanova through Mansoor Delane, the foundation of the DBU claim.
