No. 7 Miami opened its season Friday night at Stanford with Duke transfer Darian Mensah at quarterback and a roster that lost several players to the portal, dismissals and injuries in August but is healthy where it matters. Cristobal said Monday he would hold off on naming who walks out first because the battles are close and he wants players on edge. The two spots that were still live entering the game: both guard positions and the third receiver.

Position Breakdown
Quarterback. Darian Mensah led the Power Four in passing yards at Duke and won an ACC title before transferring; he was the starter from the day he arrived. Redshirt freshman Luke Nickel is the backup.
Running back. Mark Fletcher Jr. is the undisputed starter. CharMar Brown is the No. 2 with Girard Pringle Jr. and Jordan Lyle competing behind him.
Receiver. Malachi Toney and Cooper Barkate are set. The third spot was a camp long battle between Daylyn Upshaw, Vandrevius Jacobs and Josh Moore that Miami said would be decided at Stanford.
Tight end. Elija Lofton is the starter with Gavin Mueller behind him.
Offensive line. Samson Okunlola, Ryan Rodriguez and Matthew McCoy are locked in at the tackles and center. Both guard spots were still open at kickoff: SJ Alofaituli was the most likely to take one, and true freshman Jackson Cantwell, the top rated lineman in the 2026 class, was the popular pick for the other, but freshman Ben Congdon had a camp good enough to be in the mix and Max Buchanan is a primary rotation guard. Congdon could also end up as the swing tackle.
Defensive line. Armondo Blount will play everywhere on the line. Marquise Lightfoot, a former five star, moves into a larger role after a rotational year, alongside Damon Wilson at end. Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten start inside.
Linebacker. Chase Smith on the weak side and Mo Toure in the middle, with Bobby Pruitt and Kamal Bonner behind them.
Secondary. OJ Frederique and Xavier Lucas at corner. Boston College transfer Omar Thornton adapted quickly to Corey Hetherman’s scheme and plays nickel and safety interchangeably with JJ Dunnigan; Bryce Fitzgerald and Zechariah Poyser start at safety. Freshman Camdin Portis, son of Clinton Portis, should carve out a role.
