Michigan also won Big Ten East Division titles in 2018, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Divisions existed from 2011 through 2023 and have since been eliminated.
The Two Droughts
The gaps matter as much as the titles. Michigan won five conference championships between 1943 and 1950, then none for 13 years — a stretch that ended with the 1964 team and is largely forgotten because of what came after.
The second gap is more recent and more painful. After sharing the 2004 title, Michigan went 16 seasons without a Big Ten championship. That drought spanned the end of Lloyd Carr’s tenure, the Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke years, and Jim Harbaugh’s first six seasons. It broke in 2021, and the Wolverines then won three in a row.
Schembechler Won a Third of Them
Bo Schembechler’s 21 seasons produced 15 conference titles, a third of everything Michigan has ever won. He also won a program-record 194 games.
The context that makes that number remarkable is who he was beating. Schembechler’s peak overlapped almost exactly with Woody Hayes at Ohio State, and for a decade the Big Ten championship was decided in a single November game between them. Winning 15 titles in that environment is the achievement, not the raw count.
Where Michigan Ranks
Forty-five conference championships is third-most among all FBS programs. Within the Big Ten, only Michigan and Ohio State are in the same conversation — the Buckeyes have 41.
The 2023 title was the last one won under the divisional format.
