Mike Tomlin has finally shown the world his Minecraft city. The former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach posted the first episode of a YouTube series on Wednesday night, Sept. 30, giving a nearly 20 minute tour of a city he has been building for more than 12 years. The full video is below, followed by everything to know about the build.
What Is in Mike Tomlin’s Minecraft City
Episode one is called Rooftops, Penthouses and Urban Living, and it lives up to the name. Tomlin opens by explaining why he started the city, then walks through the first building he put up downtown and several rooftop properties. “I really got obsessed with rooftop penthouses,” he says in the video. He also shows off an executive spa and a conference room, talks through how hard it is to get lighting right in the game, and apologizes for his stick control along the way. A baseball field and a soccer stadium sit within walking distance of each other, and he is saving those for a future episode.
Why Tomlin Started Building
Tomlin says he picked up the game 12 or 13 years ago, when his kids were in middle school and spent entire weekends playing it. It began as a way to connect with them. He kept building long after they moved on, using the city to unwind from the demands of coaching. The world has survived three console generations, moving from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5. His oldest son, Dino, filmed and edited the video, and said the tour is being split into parts because one cut would run about two hours.
The city first came up on Sept. 8, when Tomlin mentioned it in a TODAY interview and the clip went viral. His teaser on X drew more than nine million views before the episode went live on his YouTube channel. As ESPN noted, the project has been running for most of his head coaching career. Tomlin led the Steelers for 19 seasons from 2007 to 2025, won Super Bowl XLIII and never had a losing record. He now works as an analyst on NBC’s Football Night in America, while Pittsburgh plays its first season without him. You can follow the team on our live Steelers score page.
Bottom Line
Mike Tomlin spent more than a decade quietly building a Minecraft city while coaching the Steelers, and the first video tour is now on YouTube. At least two more episodes are on the way, with the stadiums next on the list.
