The Move to the SEC Changed the Math
Oklahoma won more games than almost anyone during its Big 12 era, when it was routinely the best funded program in its conference. In the SEC it is now near the bottom of the reported spending table, competing annually against Tennessee above $40 million and Texas A&M and LSU higher still.
The 2026 results so far show the range rather than the trend: 51 points against UTEP, then ten in a 17-10 loss at Michigan. Two games is not enough to conclude anything about whether spending explains it, but the Sooners now recruit and retain against programs with meaningfully deeper pockets than the ones they used to face.
Reading These Numbers
Nothing here is a disclosed payroll. The Athletic noted that administrators, coaches, athletes and agents all have reasons to overstate or understate what is spent. On3 also changed its valuation model on July 1, 2026 from estimating marketing potential to tracking contract value, so older figures measure something different.
