The Presidents Cup has been played 15 times since 1994. The United States has won 13 of them. The International team has won once, in Australia in 1998, and one ended in a tie. Medinah in 2026 is the 16th edition.

The One International Win
Royal Melbourne, 1998. Peter Thomson’s International team beat Jack Nicklaus’s Americans 20.5-11.5, and it was not close. It remains the only time the cup has left American hands outright in 32 years.
The Tie Nobody Could Break
The 2003 edition at Fancourt in South Africa finished 17-17. Under the rules of the time, each captain named one player for a sudden-death playoff to settle it. Gary Player picked Ernie Els and Jack Nicklaus picked Tiger Woods. After three holes it was too dark to continue, and the two captains agreed to share the cup rather than keep going. The tiebreaker format was scrapped afterward.
The Closest Finishes
Two editions came down to a single point. In 1996 the Americans won 16.5-15.5 under Arnold Palmer, and in 2015 in South Korea they held on 15.5-14.5 under Jay Haas. The most lopsided was 2000, when Ken Venturi’s team won 21.5-10.5.

Why the Gap Is So Wide
The International team draws from everywhere outside Europe, which sounds like an advantage until you look at the depth. Europe has enough elite players to fill a Ryder Cup team several times over. The International side is assembling one from Australia, South Africa, Japan, South Korea, Canada and South America, and in any given cycle only a handful are playing at the very top.
LIV Golf made it harder. The Presidents Cup is a PGA Tour event, and players who left for LIV cannot qualify or be picked. That removes more from the International pool than it does from the American one.
Where It Goes Next
| Year | Venue |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois |
| 2028 | Kingston Heath Golf Club, Victoria, Australia |
| 2030 | Bellerive Country Club, Town and Country, Missouri |
The event alternates between the United States and countries represented by the International team, which is why 2028 heads back to Australia, the only place the International side has ever won.
