The Red Tails Classic is an annual college football event held at Cramton Bowl in downtown Montgomery, Alabama. It showcases historically Black colleges and universities, and it exists to honor the Tuskegee Airmen — the African American military pilots and ground crews who flew and served in World War II, whose aircraft tail sections were painted the red that gave them their nickname.
The 2026 edition on August 30 is the sixth, which makes it a young event by college football standards but an established fixture on the Week 0 calendar.

The Tuskegee Airmen Connection
The event is not named after the university by coincidence, but the reference runs deeper than the school. The Tuskegee Airmen trained at Tuskegee Army Air Field in Alabama and became the first African American military aviators in the United States armed forces, flying combat missions in Europe during World War II at a time when the military was still segregated. Their P-51 Mustangs carried distinctive red-painted tail sections, and German pilots and American bomber crews alike came to know them by that marking.
Montgomery is the logical home for the game. It sits close to Tuskegee, and the region’s aviation history is still active — a 2023 edition of the Classic featured an AC-130J gunship flyover from the 73rd Special Operations Squadron. The event pairs the football with recognition of that history rather than treating it as branding.
Who Plays in It
Tuskegee University has appeared in every Red Tails Classic to date, making 2026 its sixth consecutive appearance. The opponent rotates. In 2025 it was Winston-Salem State, which Tuskegee beat 20-17 after scoring on all three of its second-half possessions. For 2026 the opponent is the University of West Alabama, and that pairing is a first: no previous Classic had featured two in-state programs. West Alabama also becomes the seventh different Alabama school to play in an ESPN event at Cramton Bowl.
Cramton Bowl itself hosts several postseason and kickoff events beyond this one, including the FCS Kickoff and the Salute to Veterans Bowl, all under the same event organization. That’s part of why a Division II game ends up on national television — the venue and the operator already have the ESPN relationship in place.
Red Tails Classic Weekend
For 2026 the game became the anchor of a larger three-day program. Tuskegee University hosted its first "Red Tails Classic Weekend" from Friday, August 28 through Sunday, August 30, built around workforce and STEM programming rather than just tailgating.
| Day | Event |
|---|---|
| Friday, Aug. 28 | Tuskegee Talent Summit and Workforce Solutions Forum, connecting students with Alabama employers in aviation, robotics, nursing and education |
| Saturday, Aug. 29 | K-12 STEM Exploration Day on the Montgomery Riverfront, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a "STEM Passport" covering aviation, cybersecurity, agriculture and AI |
| Saturday evening | Red Tails Classic Gala, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., raising funds for Tuskegee students |
| Sunday, Aug. 30 | The game: West Alabama vs. Tuskegee at Cramton Bowl |
Why It Matters
HBCU football has a handful of showcase events that reliably draw national television — the Celebration Bowl, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, various classics scattered through the season. The Red Tails Classic is the Division II entry in that group, and it gives programs that rarely get a national window one guaranteed appearance a year. For teams like Tuskegee, playing on ESPN2 in Week 0 is a recruiting and visibility asset that a normal Division II schedule simply does not produce. The Bottom Line
The Red Tails Classic is a Division II HBCU football showcase played each year at Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, named for the Tuskegee Airmen and typically televised by ESPN. Tuskegee has played in all six editions. The 2026 game against West Alabama on August 30 is the first to feature two Alabama schools, and it now sits at the end of a three-day weekend of academic and community programming.
