Usually yes — but the deadline that decides it is August 31, not September 1. A player must be in the organisation by 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31 to be eligible for a postseason roster.
That is why the last day of August matters more to contenders than the first day of September.
The Rule
To appear on a postseason roster, a player must have been on his club’s active roster, injured list, bereavement list or restricted list — or somewhere in the organisation — as of 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31.
He does not need to be in the major leagues on that date. A prospect at Double-A on August 31 who gets promoted in mid-September is still eligible, because he was in the organisation when the deadline passed.
What he cannot be is a player who joined the organisation in September. Sign a free agent on September 5 and he can help you win a division, but he cannot play in October.
Why Anyone Promoted on September 1 Is Fine
This is the part that reads as a technicality but matters. Every player added when rosters expand was, by definition, already in the organisation the previous day. So the entire September 1 class is playoff eligible automatically.
Strictly speaking, a player promoted on August 31 is not a September call-up at all — and clubs sometimes make that move a day early precisely to remove any ambiguity.
The Injury Exception
There is one meaningful carve-out. If a player on the postseason roster is injured, a club may petition the Commissioner’s Office to replace him with someone who was not in the organisation by the deadline.
The replacement must play the same position — a pitcher for a pitcher, a position player for a position player — and the injured player is then ineligible for the remainder of that postseason series and sometimes beyond.
It Happens More Than You’d Think
September debutants regularly end up mattering in October. Last season Trey Yesavage in Toronto and Connelly Early in Boston both arrived as September call-ups and both started playoff games.
A club carrying an extra reliever through September has effectively been auditioning that arm for a postseason bullpen. The two expansion spots are, for a contender, a month-long tryout.
Rosters Are Set Round by Round
Postseason rosters are not fixed for October. Each club submits a new roster before every round, and can change it between series as long as every player named met the August 31 requirement.

September call-ups are eligible for the playoffs provided they were in the organisation by 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31. Anyone promoted when rosters expand qualifies automatically. Players who join a club in September do not, unless they come in as an approved injury replacement at the same position.
