Twelve of the NFL’s 32 teams have never won a Super Bowl: the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Los Angeles Chargers, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans. Eight of them have played in at least one Super Bowl and lost, and four have never reached the game at all. Twenty franchises have won the 60 Super Bowls played through February 2026.

The Closest Calls
Buffalo reached four straight Super Bowls after the 1990 through 1993 seasons and lost all four, the first by one point when Scott Norwood’s 47 yard field goal went wide right against the Giants in Super Bowl XXV. Minnesota also lost four, all in the 1970s. Atlanta led New England 28 to 3 in the third quarter of Super Bowl LI before losing in the first overtime in Super Bowl history. Tennessee finished Super Bowl XXXIV a yard short when Kevin Dyson was tackled at the 1 yard line on the final play against the Rams. Cincinnati lost two Super Bowls to Joe Montana’s 49ers and a third to the Rams after the 2021 season.
Championships Before the Super Bowl
Several of these teams won titles before the Super Bowl began with the 1966 season. The Browns won NFL championships in 1950, 1954, 1955 and 1964, plus four in the All America Football Conference, and the Lions won four NFL titles, the last in 1957. The Cardinals won NFL championships in 1925 and 1947, and the Bills won the AFL title in 1964 and 1965.
