Texas Football Conference Championships: Complete History

Texas has won 33 conference championships across three leagues, and 27 of them came in the Southwest Conference, which the Longhorns won more often than any other member across its 80 year existence. Four came in the Big 12. None has come in the SEC, which Texas joined in 2024.

Royal’s Eleven

Darrell Royal won the Southwest Conference eleven times in 20 seasons, including six straight from 1968 to 1973 in the first years of the wishbone. His conference record was 109 wins, 27 losses and 2 ties. Nobody else in programme history has more than three.

The Southwest Conference

Texas was a founding member in 1915 and won it 27 times before the league dissolved in 1996, more than any other school. Arkansas and Texas A&M were the only other members to win it more than ten times. The final SWC title in 1995 came under John Mackovic, who then won the first Big 12 championship game a year later, beating Nebraska 37 to 27 in what remains one of the biggest upsets in conference title game history.

The Big 12 Gap

Four titles in 28 Big 12 seasons is the number that shaped how Mack Brown’s tenure ended. Oklahoma won eight in the same span Brown won two. The 2023 title under Steve Sarkisian, a 49 to 21 win over Oklahoma State, was the programme’s first in 14 years and the last game Texas played as a Big 12 member.

The SEC

Texas has played two SEC seasons and reached the championship game once, losing to Georgia in overtime in 2024. The 2025 team went 6 and 2 in the conference and did not qualify. A conference title in the SEC would be the programme’s first in a fourth different league.

The Bottom Line

Texas has won 33 conference championships: two in the TIAA, 27 in the Southwest Conference and four in the Big 12. Darrell Royal won eleven of them. The most recent came in 2023, the programme’s last season before joining the SEC, where it has not yet won one. Our page on most conference championships shows where Texas ranks nationally.
