ESPN+ Works Differently to SEC Network+

This is worth understanding, because two other games this weekend are on SEC Network+ and the rules are not the same.

ESPN+ is a standalone subscription. You can buy it directly for a monthly fee with no cable package, no provider login and no authentication. Anyone can watch this game.

SEC Network+ cannot be bought separately. It requires a pay-TV or streaming provider that carries SEC Network. If you don’t have one, you cannot access it at any price.

So of the three streaming-only games in Week 1, this is the one that’s genuinely available to everybody.

An In-State Meeting

Utah Tech is in St. George, about 250 miles south of Provo, and moved to Division I relatively recently. It competes in the Western Athletic Conference.

BYU’s schedule takes a different shape after this — the Cougars are now a Big 12 program with a conference slate that offers little of this kind of gentle start.

LaVell Edwards Stadium

Named for the coach who ran BYU for 29 seasons and won a national championship in 1984, the stadium sits at the foot of the Wasatch Range at about 4,600 feet. The altitude is a genuine factor for visiting teams late in games.

The Bottom Line

Utah Tech at BYU kicks off 8:00 p.m. ET Saturday, September 5, streaming exclusively on ESPN+. Unlike the SEC Network+ games this weekend, ESPN+ is a standalone subscription requiring no cable provider — so this one is available to anyone willing to pay for the service.
