Two games into a 38-game season, the table means very little. It does mean one thing, though: Hull City, given the worst survival odds of the three promoted clubs before a ball was kicked, is level on points at the summit with Manchester City and Chelsea.
At the other end, the defending champions have played once and the Championship winners have no points at all.

The Hull City Story
Hull came up through the play-offs after finishing sixth in the Championship, the least convincing of the three promotions. Their 73-point season was built on an expected-points total of roughly 53, meaning they substantially outperformed their underlying numbers on the way up — usually a warning sign. Opta’s model in mid-August put their relegation probability at 38.7 percent, the highest of the promoted trio.
Two matches later they have six points from six, including a 2-0 win over Manchester United and a 1-0 win at Coventry. Sergej Jakirović’s side is the only promoted club with a point so far, let alone two wins.
Coventry’s Difficult Welcome
The contrast is stark. Coventry won the Championship by 11 points with 95 points and 97 goals under Frank Lampard, arriving with the best underlying profile of the three promoted sides and the lowest relegation probability at 27.9 percent. They are back in the top flight for the first time since 2001.
They also drew the worst possible opening, with Arsenal and Manchester City inside the first three fixtures, starting away at the Emirates on opening night. Two games, two defeats, no points. The fixture list, not the football, explains most of that.
What Else the Table Says
Tottenham are bottom on zero points after losing at home to Newcastle. Liverpool have drawn both matches, including 2-2 with Nottingham Forest. Manchester City opened with a 4-1 win at Crystal Palace and sit top on goal difference.

The Bottom Line
Manchester City, Hull City and Chelsea are the only clubs with maximum points. Hull being among them, having been handed the worst survival odds of the three promoted sides, is the genuine surprise of the opening fortnight. Five clubs are still searching for a first point, including the Championship winners and Tottenham. With 36 matches left, none of it is settled — but Hull’s supporters are entitled to enjoy it.
