Michigan has more wins than any program in college football history — 1,021 of them — and a losing record in bowl games. Both things are true, and the second one is less damning than it looks.
The Wolverines are 24-30 across 54 bowl appearances, a .444 mark that ranks well down the national list. Here’s how that happened.

Why the Record Is Under .500
Three things explain most of it.
Michigan almost always played the best available opponent. For decades the Big Ten champion went to the Rose Bowl to face the Pac-10 champion, with no negotiation and no soft landing spot. Michigan won the conference 45 times, more than all but two programs, which meant repeatedly drawing USC, Washington and Stanford at full strength rather than a middling team from a weaker league.
The Wolverines went to bowls when bowls were rarer. Michigan’s bowl history stretches back far enough that a large share of those 54 games came when only a handful of teams played in the postseason at all. Programs that built their bowl records in the modern era, with dozens of games and frequent mismatches, had opportunities Michigan’s earlier teams never got.
The Big Ten had a long dry spell in Pasadena. From the late 1970s through the 1990s the conference struggled badly in the Rose Bowl, and Michigan absorbed a disproportionate share of those defeats simply by qualifying so often.
The Rose Bowl Relationship
No program is more associated with the Rose Bowl. Michigan played in the very first one after the 1901 season, beating Stanford so thoroughly that the game was not staged again for 14 years, and the Wolverines have returned more often than anyone.
Two of Michigan’s three bowl-decided national championships came in Pasadena. The 1947 team, coached by Fritz Crisler, capped its title with a Rose Bowl win. The 1997 team, Lloyd Carr’s unbeaten side led by Charles Woodson, sealed a share of the national championship there. The 2023 Rose Bowl was a College Football Playoff semifinal, and Michigan won it 27-20 in overtime against Alabama on the way to the title.
The Playoff Era
Michigan reached the College Football Playoff in three consecutive seasons and finished 2-2 in those games. The first two ended in semifinal losses. The third produced everything.

The 2023 team finished 15-0 and outscored opponents 538-156, the only unbeaten season in modern Michigan history and the program’s first national title since 1997.
Where It Stands Now
Michigan went 9-4 in 2025 and lost the Citrus Bowl to Texas, a season that ended with head coach Sherrone Moore fired in December and Biff Poggi running the bowl game on an interim basis. Kyle Whittingham arrives for 2026 as the program’s new head coach.

The Bottom Line
Michigan is 24-30 in 54 bowl games, an unusual record for a program with more all-time wins than anyone. The explanation is that the Wolverines spent most of the 20th century winning the Big Ten and going straight to the Rose Bowl to play the best team on the West Coast. Three of those postseason trips ended with a national championship, most recently the 34-13 win over Washington in January 2024.
