The Number That Doesn’t Fit
Every line in that table is elite except one. Michigan ranks first, second, third or fourth in nearly every category that measures a program’s history — and 75th in bowl winning percentage.
The explanation is structural rather than a failure of nerve. Michigan won the Big Ten 45 times, and for most of the 20th century a Big Ten title meant a Rose Bowl date against the best team on the West Coast, with no choice of opponent. Reaching 1,000 Wins
Michigan became the first program in college football to reach 1,000 victories, a milestone built over 147 seasons since the first game in 1879. The pace required to get there first was roughly seven wins a season, every season, for a century and a half.
Ohio State, Alabama, Texas and Notre Dame are the programs closest behind. The gap is small enough that the record could change hands within a decade, which is part of why the number gets cited so often in Ann Arbor.

Michigan Stadium holds 107,601, the largest capacity of any stadium in the United States and among the largest in the world. Announced attendance has exceeded 100,000 for every home game since 1975, a streak no other program approaches.
Where the Program Stands
Michigan enters 2026 under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, hired after Sherrone Moore was fired in December following a 9-4 season. The Wolverines are three years removed from a 15-0 national championship and coming off their first loss to Ohio State since 2019.
