Georgia has won the SEC 16 times, second in conference history behind Alabama’s 30, and four of those have come under Kirby Smart, including back to back titles in 2024 and 2025. The Bulldogs have played in five consecutive SEC championship games, a record shared only with Florida’s teams of the mid 1990s.
Every SEC Title by Coach
| Coach | Titles | Seasons |
|---|---|---|
| Vince Dooley | 6 | 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982 |
| Kirby Smart | 4 | 2017, 2022, 2024, 2025 |
| Wally Butts | 4 | 1942, 1946, 1948, 1959 |
| Mark Richt | 2 | 2002, 2005 |
Georgia also won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1896 under Pop Warner and 1920 under Herman Stegeman, before the SEC was formed.
Dooley’s Six
Vince Dooley won six SEC championships in 25 seasons, including three straight from 1980 to 1982 in the Herschel Walker years. The 1980 title came with the national championship, and the 1982 team was ranked first for most of the season before losing the Sugar Bowl. Nobody else in program history has more than four.
Smart’s Four and the Five Straight Finals
Kirby Smart has won the SEC four times in ten seasons and reached the championship game five years running from 2021 to 2025. Only Florida under Steve Spurrier from 1992 to 1996 has matched that. The 2022 title was a 50 to 30 win over LSU on the way to a 15 and 0 season, the 2024 title came in overtime against Texas, and the 2025 title was a 28 to 7 win over Alabama.
The 2021 and 2023 finals were both lost to Alabama, and the 2023 defeat ended a 29 game winning streak that remains the longest in SEC history. Georgia won the 2021 national championship anyway, beating Alabama in the playoff final a month later.
The Gap to Alabama
Alabama has 30 SEC titles, Georgia 16, Tennessee 13, LSU 12. Georgia has closed some of that ground recently, winning four of the last nine conference championships, but the historical margin was built in the Bryant and Saban years and is not going to close. Our Alabama conference championships page covers the other side.
The Richt Years
Mark Richt won two SEC titles in fifteen seasons, in 2002 and 2005, and reached the championship game five times. The 2002 title was Georgia’s first in twenty years. That he won only two, while going 145 and 51 overall, was the number that shaped how his tenure ended.
The Bottom Line
Georgia has won 16 SEC championships and 18 conference titles in total. Vince Dooley won six, Kirby Smart four, and Smart’s teams have played in five consecutive SEC championship games. The 2025 title, a 28 to 7 win over Alabama, was the program’s second straight. Our page on most conference championships shows where Georgia ranks nationally.
