The Hand Injury

Mateer opened 2025 by pushing Oklahoma to 4 and 0 and generating real Heisman buzz. Then he had surgery on his throwing hand, came back sooner than most expected, and threw three interceptions in a 23 to 6 loss to Texas. He never got back to his September form, the offense stalled in conference play, and Alabama knocked Oklahoma out in the first round of the playoff. He has said he played much of the year with a broken thumb.

The Short Version

Mateer was a three star recruit who barely played his first two years at Washington State, then broke out in 2024 with 29 passing touchdowns and 826 rushing yards, one of the most productive dual threat seasons in the country. He followed his coordinator to Oklahoma, made the playoff at 10 and 3 despite the injury, and came back for a senior year rather than entering the draft. Oklahoma opened 2026 with a shutout of UTEP and goes to Michigan next.

Heisman Odds

Mateer was one of only two quarterbacks whose price improved over opening weekend, moving from 25 to 1 in to 20 to 1 after the UTEP game. The full board updates weekly on Heisman odds.

The Bottom Line

John Mateer is a 22 year old senior from Little Elm, Texas, with 6,291 career passing yards, 46 touchdown passes and 1,407 rushing yards across four seasons at two schools. His 2025 was a healthy September and then a hand injury that cost him the rest of it. He is 17 and 7 as a starter and gets one more year to fix the ending. This page updates after every game.
