What Each Is Playing For
Sabalenka is in her eighth consecutive hard court Grand Slam final, an Open era record for any player. A win would make her the first woman to win three straight US Open titles since Serena Williams took 2012 through 2014. She beat Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 in Thursday’s semifinal, trading holds for 11 games before breaking, then breaking twice more in the second set. She faced exactly one break point all night and saved it.
Rybakina is in her first US Open final; her previous best here was the fourth round. She beat Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the night semifinal, losing the opening set before her serve took over. She had already clinched the world No. 1 ranking by reaching the semifinals, and that becomes official when the rankings publish Monday, September 14, regardless of what happens Saturday.
The Head-to-Head
Sabalenka leads 10-7 overall. This is their third major final: Sabalenka won the 2023 Australian Open final in three sets, and Rybakina won this year’s Australian Open final. Since Melbourne, Sabalenka has won both meetings, taking the Indian Wells final and the Miami semifinal.
The matchup is two of the biggest hitters in the sport, which usually means the winner is whoever holds serve more comfortably and blinks less in the tiebreak. Rybakina’s serve is the single best shot on the court; Sabalenka’s return and her ability to redirect pace have been the difference in most of their recent meetings.
