The Women’s Final
Sabalenka vs. Rybakina is the top two players in the world for the title. Sabalenka is in her eighth consecutive hard court Grand Slam final, an Open era record, and is one win from the first US Open three peat since Serena Williams won 2012 through 2014. She beat Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday and faced one break point all night. Rybakina, who beat Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in Thursday’s night match, is in her first US Open final; her previous best here was the fourth round. She has already clinched the world No. 1 ranking, which becomes official when the rankings publish Monday, September 14.
This is their third major final. Sabalenka won the 2023 Australian Open final in three sets and Rybakina won this year’s Australian Open final. Since Melbourne, Sabalenka has beaten her in the Indian Wells final and the Miami semifinals. Our WTA rankings page has the current top 25.
What Happened Friday
No. 1 Alexander Zverev beat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) in the first men’s semifinal. Zverev won the first set with a single break, then had to come from behind in both tiebreaks; Khachanov led 3-0 in the third set breaker and had two set points before a Zverev ace and a backhand error ended it after nearly three hours. Zverev hit 15 aces and won only three more points than Khachanov, 107 to 104. It is his third straight Grand Slam final after winning the French Open and losing the Wimbledon final, his second US Open final after 2020, and his 13th consecutive set won since he played five setters in each of the first two rounds.
No. 8 Ben Shelton beat No. 11 Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the all American night match. Tiafoe took the first set before Shelton’s serve and forehand took over; Shelton finished with 47 winners to Tiafoe’s 27. It is Shelton’s first Grand Slam final, three days after he beat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a quarterfinal that ended at 3:33 a.m. He is guaranteed to be ranked No. 4 in the world after the tournament, up from No. 9, and dedicated the win to his grandmother, who died earlier this year.
Sunday’s Men’s Final: Shelton vs. Zverev
Sunday, September 13, 2 p.m. ET on ABC. Shelton is trying to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open, 23 years and 90 majors ago. Zverev is trying to win his second major of the year and the second of his career. Full history of the American drought is on our last American man to win the US Open page.
