Naomi Osaka is out of the 2026 US Open. She lost to No. 2 seed Elena Rybakina 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 16 on Monday afternoon on Louis Armstrong Stadium, a match that took 66 minutes. There is no next match for her at Flushing Meadows.
How the Match Went
Rybakina was the better player from the first game and never let it get close. She hit seven aces to Osaka’s two, made one double fault to Osaka’s five, won 27 of her 31 first serve points and saved the only break point she faced all match. She converted three of eight break chances and took 60 of the 101 points played.
The first set was gone in a hurry at 6-1. Osaka steadied in the second and held with her until a single break in the seventh game settled it. Rybakina said afterward that she had not expected to play that well, and given that she had needed three sets to get past Osaka in Toronto less than a month earlier, the gap was a surprise on both sides of the net.
Where This Leaves Her Season
Osaka came into the tournament seeded 13th and reached the fourth round by beating Elise Mertens 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, a match in which three match points slipped away and she took trainer treatment at the third set changeover for an Achilles problem that has followed her since the grass court season. She is a two time champion here, in 2018 and 2020, and a four time major winner overall.
Her next tournament has not been announced. The tour moves to the Asian hard court swing after New York, so that is where her fall schedule will most likely pick up, but nothing is confirmed. We will update this page when it is.

Beating Osaka put Rybakina into her first US Open quarterfinal, where she plays Zheng Qinwen on Wednesday. There is a large prize attached: if Rybakina wins that match and reaches the semifinals, she becomes world No. 1 for the first time, no matter what Aryna Sabalenka does the rest of the way.
