The Two That Got Away
Both of his first two finals were winnable. At the 2020 US Open he led Thiem by two sets and lost in a fifth-set tiebreak. At the 2024 French Open he led Alcaraz two sets to one before losing the last two.
The 2025 Australian Open made it three defeats in three finals, and the question of whether he would ever win one had become the defining story of his career.
The Breakthrough
He answered it at Roland Garros in 2026, going five sets with Flavio Cobolli on Philippe-Chatrier. It was a fitting venue: Paris was where he had lost to Alcaraz, and where he had retired with an ankle injury in the 2022 semifinal against Rafael Nadal, an injury that cost him the rest of that season.
