What Is at Stake
Not much in the standings, which is its own kind of storyline. The Mets have fallen to last in the NL East and are 14 games under .500 after a September that never produced the run they needed. Baltimore is in a similar spot in the AL East, fifth and well outside the wild card picture. What is left is evaluation. Tong is the reason to watch on the New York side, a young right-hander getting starts in the final two weeks with a favorable matchup in front of him, and Young has quietly put together a strong record for a team that has not given him much support.
