The Division Races Still Alive
The AL Central and AL West are the only two genuinely contested divisions. The AL Central is a fight over seeding, since both Chicago and Cleveland have been in the playoff picture. The AL West is closer to winner take all, because neither Houston nor Texas has been holding a wild card spot.
Milwaukee, the Dodgers, Atlanta and Tampa Bay have all been comfortable in their divisions.
The Race for the Byes
The two best records in each league earn a first round bye. In the National League that has been Milwaukee and the Dodgers, with Atlanta close enough to matter. In the American League, Tampa Bay has been the clear top seed and the second bye is genuinely open.
