The tables above update themselves as games go final. Division leaders are the top row of each division and receive the top three seeds; the wild card tables show the remaining three seeds in each league.

How the Bracket Works

Each league sends six teams: three division winners and three wild cards. The two division winners with the best records receive a first round bye and go straight to the Division Series.

The other four play best of three Wild Card Series. The higher seed hosts all three games, which is a meaningful edge and the reason seeding matters even for teams already assured of a spot.

The Byes Are the Real Prize

The quirk of the format is that a division winner with a modest record earns a bye ahead of a wild card team with far more wins. The White Sox have been holding an American League bye at a record well behind the Yankees, purely because Chicago leads a division and New York does not. That is why the AL Central race carries weight beyond its own standings.
