How to Read the Race
The table above is the race itself, live. Division leaders are excluded, the cut line sits after the third spot, and it updates as games go final. In the final week the order can turn over on a single night, so this page carries the live table rather than a written snapshot that is wrong by morning.
Two things usually decide the last spot: whoever loses a tight division race and drops into the wild card instead, and how many games each contender has left to make up ground. Games remaining matter as much as games behind.
How the Format Works
Six National League teams reach the postseason: three division winners and three wild cards. The two division winners with the best records get first round byes. The third division winner and the top wild card host best of three series, with the higher seed playing all three games at home. That is why the gap between the first and third wild card matters.
