How to Read the Race
The table above is the race itself, live. Division leaders are excluded, the cut line sits after the third spot, and everything updates as games go final. In the last week of the season the order can change on a single night, which is why this page carries the table rather than a written snapshot that goes stale by morning.
Two things decide the final spot most years: the loser of a close division race sliding into the wild card, and the number of games each contender has left. A team three back with seven to play is in better shape than a team two back with three to play.
How the Format Works
Six teams from each league reach the postseason: three division winners and three wild cards. The top two division winners receive first round byes. The third division winner and the top wild card host best of three wild card series, with the higher seed playing all three games at home.
