What to Watch
This is the tightest division race in the American League. Chicago and Cleveland have not separated at any point in the last month, and the lead has stayed inside a game or two throughout. The table above carries the current margin and both magic numbers.
The unusual part is that both are likely to reach October regardless. Cleveland has been holding the last AL wild card spot, so this race is about seeding and home field rather than survival, unless the Guardians slip behind Toronto and Texas in the wild card chase.
Minnesota, Detroit and Kansas City are effectively out.
